Eavestrough in Galt

Eavestrough work across Galt, from the Dickson Hill and downtown heritage streets to the postwar blocks east of the Grand.

Galt is where Cambridge's eavestrough work is most often carpentry first. The yellow-brick and fieldstone houses around Dickson Hill, the downtown core and the streets climbing from the river have deep overhangs, decorative wood fascia and plank soffit that have sat behind leaking troughs for a century, and the rot concentrates at the corners and under old outlets. New trough on that wood does not hold, so the quote here nearly always separates fascia to replace from fascia to cap or repaint, and on houses in the Dickson Hill or Main Street Heritage Conservation Districts, or individually designated, the visible profile is discussed with the City's heritage staff before aluminum goes over original woodwork. Lots are tight: houses sit a metre or two from the public sidewalk and close to each other, and the Property Standards By-law's rule against discharging roof water onto a sidewalk, walkway, stair or neighbouring property means front downspouts are run to the side or back and side downspouts are brought to the rear corners. Several older houses have a downspout into a clay or cast iron standpipe at grade that gets traced before any new connection. East of the river the postwar housing has aging steel and sectional aluminum and more conventional replacement work.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover Ayr and North Dumfries, or just the city?

Both, on the same terms. Ayr and the rural lots around it are in North Dumfries Township, so Cambridge's property standards by-law does not apply there — the township's does — but the Region's sewer by-law and the basic job of keeping roof water off the foundation are the same.

Is the quote different for a century home in Galt versus a new build in Hespeler?

The per-foot trough price is the same; what differs is the carpentry. A century home nearly always needs fascia and soffit work before a trough can be hung and that is quoted section by section after probing. A new build usually needs added outlets and relocated downspouts and little else.

Do you work on houses with a well and septic?

Yes, and the septic bed changes the downspout layout. Roof water over a leaching bed overloads it, so downspouts on that side are run or extended well away. Bring whatever drawing you have of the bed to the site visit.
